Wednesday 12/18

We worked through peer editing today. All students are required to have two peers read through and make suggestions on their rough drafts.Several students are very behind int he process, they will need still need to get feedback from peers.  Logs collected tomorrow.

All students will be given 40 minutes of class time tomorrow to type their next draft.  I will collect research with cover sheets (3), RD with 2 peer editing sheets attached and the typewritten draft at the end of the period tomorrow.

Tuesday 12/17

Today I took a grade on notes.  You were to show me the three resources you would be using and the cover sheet for each.  We then work on the rough draft.  RD due tomorrow and log on Friday.

Monday 12/15

Today we read for 10 minutes, we then worked through a mini lesson that pointed out the difference between paraphrase and plagiarism.

HW: 100 minutes due on log on Friday.

Today we read for 10 minutes, investigated patterns of the written wonders, then researched.  I will collect logs tomorrow and the hope is by tomorrow you will be in a spot that you can begin writing your rough draft.

Woohoo we got a full 80 minute class period today an you guys were awesome! We read for 10. I gave a 6 minute mini-lesson on searching smarter then you got to research.  Many of you left with at least 2 articles you could use.  You should read through those tonight (yes you can count the time on your reading logs!) The plan is to be in a spot where you can write your rough draft for the whole period on Friday. I will collect logs Friday.

Tuesday 12/10

I was out yesterday so you guys had a double Social Studies period to write your Carnegie report.  Remember logs are due Friday.

Today in class we spent 10 minutes reading. We then talked about different ways of keeping our notes organized.  I collected half sheets of paper from each person with his/her Wonder question on it.  I will compile a list of wonders and use it as a means to help you envelop clearer questions.  We then set to work trying the first note-taking strategy using the handout I provided and the article we had printed out for today.  If you were absent you will need to:  Provide me your wonder question, write about how you stay organized through the research process in the tips section of your Reader's Notebook, show me your article #1 and begin reading that article.  In addition tonight's HW is to write long write #5. Base this on a reaction or a prediction post it you kept today and spend your long write trying to relay how the author go thou to predict or react as you did. In other wors, what are the hints s/he gave you to lead you to react as you did?

Wonder research began today. First we consulted a partner and wondered which of wonders they thought was most intriguing and compelling.  We then began searching for an article that would help us by using a site: search.  Reminders were given about refining searches and that we have the ability to change our questions once we begin the research. Logs were collected.
HW: find at least one article of substance for class on Tuesday. You will be working on your social studies paper on Monday. Also READ/LOG?POST-IT.

Today we worked through developing our wonder questions. 5 wonders are due in class tomorrow. They should be completed on the worksheet handed out in class.

Today was half day. My afternoon classes signed into the tech challenge #1 group in Edmodo and answered Mr. Carlson's reflection questions and my 2 sets of reflection questions. IF you were absent, please complete this task.  Reminder logs will be collected on Friday.

Today we returned to Wonderopolis to determine what comprises a Wonder page.  Students mapped out the page, then made observations about each component in an effort to understand their assignment better.  They will be creating a Wonder page of their very own and it will need to contain the same components as the 1113 Wonders on Wonderopolis.  HW:Read/log/post it Logs due on Friday.

Welcome back. I hope your break was fantastic.  Today we are investigating the different facets of a wonder on Wonderopolis.  Students will choose a wonder in which they are interested. They will then complete a trifold worksheet that asks for some critical thinking and close reading of the non-fiction piece they have selected individually.  Tomorrow we will decide on our very own wonders that are related to the image project from the beginning of the year.  We will then dissect a wonder to determine what the expectations are for the assignment.

Today we book talked for a bit using the Scholastic flyer as a jumping off point. We read for 10 minutes and we learned a cool technique for searching images, checked out Wonderopolis and uploaded an image to Edmodo.

Today we turned in our essays. We turned in our novel and we joined the kidblog for the class and wrote our first post! Nice job.

Today we worked on typing our revised papers.  Tomorrow's class is devoted to making this draft even better, especially the conclusions so it will be important to have the paper  done and in hand in class. Also I am collecting logs tomorrow-since we have spent so much time writing, I am decreasing the amount of reading time to 100 minutes instead of 150 BUT there is a longwrite due as well. LW#4 should reflect on a post it you kept this week.

Today we worked toward writing the rough draft of our essay.  First we started by looking at each other's ideas about theme that we generated in class yesterday.  We then looked at the assignment sheet and began a prewriting worksheet. Lots of great questions and work were going on in class.  Your homework is to read/log and post it.  I collected Powerschool grades and handed back papers. If you were absent be sure to hand that stuff in.

Today in class we did the carousel activity and students shared possible themes of Nightjohn. We will block tomorrow.  HW: redo your theme LW if applicable.  AND print your PS grade and have it in hand for tomorrow's class.

Today we did more work with theme in class.  Groups met to discuss possible themes developed through the inclusion of characters like NJ, Mammy, Waller and Sarney
HW: LW#3 Theme. Tell what a possible theme is from your book. Remember theme is a statement about life.  It is not a one word idea, it is a life lesson.  Note you do not have to base this longwrite on a post it. ALSO PRint your PS grade by Wednesday's class.

Today we worked collaboratively to begin describing character traits of either Mammy, Nightjohn, Sarny or Waller. Students were encouraged to use the list of character traits to increase the precision of their adjectives. HW: read/log/post it

Wednesday 10/23

Today we read for 10 minutes.  We also took notes on theme and characterization in preparation for the essay we will be writing. If you were absent see me for the notes.  After taking the notes in the tips section of our reader's notebooks we turned to the reflection section and split the page into four quadrants and labeled each quadrant one of the 4 main characters (NJ, Mammy, Sarny, and Waller).  We then spent time describing each of the characters.  We will work more with these on MOnday.  HW for tonight: LOGS COLLECTED TOMORROW__150 minutes.

Why does the last chapter have a title? What does it mean?

We then began chapter 5 of Nightjohn with prompts for post its.

Today we reviewed what we learned in chapter 3 then we read chapter 4 and reflected on the chapter answering the questions below both orally and in our reader's notebook(at least the 2 marked questions). Today I collected logs and post its. We then read chapter 3 and reflected on the chapter using the questions below in the reflections section of reader's notebooks. We then took time to talk with our partner about the chapter.  The homework is to read in your IR books/log time and keep post-its. 150 minutes will be expected on your logs next Friday.

Today in class I checked on Vocabulary words. Several of you need to continue collecting to meet the 25 word target. Others of you have done a stellar job of meeting the goal!  Continue to collect words that you would like to own.  I asked for each student to please turn in 2 words that they would like to make their own. I will select from these words and model ways to make words your own.
We read all of chapter 2 in Nightjohn and began ch 3.  We will continue tomorrow be sure to have your book wtih you!  HW for tonight is to be sure your log is complete, tallies of time and pages are computed and it ready to turn in fora grade tomorrow.

Today in class I collected reading logs, we read for 10 minutes then talked about first impressions.  We talked also about the many ways authors drop us hints to guide the way we think about characters, plot, setting etc.. I introduced the idea of post its and reminded students that by next Thursday they have to have collected at least 25 words in their notebooks.  Reading logs for the week of 9/27 to 10/4 willbe collected on Friday 10/4.

Today we read for 10 minutes. Shared our vocabulary words stressing that we want to add words we have heard before. We then talked about books that are just right and what good readers do to grow theories about books before they read them.  We watched the book trailer for the book we are about to begin reading as a class. Today we read for 10 minutes, logged that time then used the old logs that I returned to figure out how many pages per minute we were reading.  We reflected on that in the ME section of our reading notebooks by noting how many pages we read per minute and looking for where we read more efficiently.  We talked for a bit about vocabulary and the procedures we will use to grow our own vocabularies.  You will need to read for homework tonight and record 2 words in the vocab sections of your notebooks. This means you have to pay attention to the words that surround you!

Today many students presented to the teachers on their topic.  If you did not present today you will do so on Friday.  Homework is to prepare for your classroom presentation AND IR Logs will be collected tomorrow.  Below is an index card example.  When students present on Monday they will be able to use an index card with the following guidelines:

1. Only use front side
2. Can only have 13 TOTAL bullets
3. Can only have 5 bullets per in any one category (BI/TOP/IM)
4. Only 5 words per bullet are allowed

The index card will be collected after the presentation for a grade.

Block 2/3 met today and were able to finish text research and start reading the historical article they found.  Homework for this block is to have their articles ready to go at the beginning of Wednesday's class.  They need to also have their historical photo attached to their assignment.

Monday 9/16

We kicked off Clarklisto Project #1 today.  The assignment is detailed through this link. When in my folder, click on Image Project to download the assignment.  We also watched the Space Shuttle Challenger video to model our expectations for the assignment. Students filled out the worksheet detailing their topic choice and theme.  We modeled note-taking strategies and students were given time to research their topics in the text book.  When we meet again, students should have the following complete:

  • Topic chosen and fine-tuned
  • Text book research complete and notes filled out
  • one more source located and printed out so as to be prepared to annotate and take notes in class. (See links to the side for assistance)

Additionally, students are reminded that I will collect logs on Friday, the expectation is that they will have logged 150 minutes reading in their IR books.

Today in class we further prepared our notebooks and selves for a successful year of reading.  We pasted 3 glue ins into our notebooks in the tips section and in the ALL ABOUT ME section we wrote about the following topics:

  • A time when reading was the pits--describe it and try to figure out what was yucky about it
  • A time when reading was awesome.--Again describe it and try to figure out.
Finally: Create a list of what you need in order to make reading the best it can be.

Friday 9/6

Today in class we set up the reader's notebook.  HW for the weekend is to make the tabs permanent in the readers notebook by using sturdy paper like index cards and taping those to the outside of the page.  You are also required to begin your To Read list by adding five titles (and author, genre, how you heard about it etc..) to the first page of your notebooks.

Wednesday and Thursday 5/15 and 5/16

We covered the Holocaust in class on both days.  We read excerpts from Elie Wiesel's Night and watched clips from Century, Schindler's list and Band of Brothers.  Students whose topic was Holocaust gave presentations as a means of an overview of this very dark time in history.
HW: Blog response tonight--This one must be a minimum of 10 sentences.
Also read your IR books and bring them to class tomorrow for our ELA activity.

Today we covered D-day.  We did this by watching a clip from special features of Saving Private Ryan. We then read a first hand account of the day provided by Frank Walk. We noted obstacles faced and then watched a 24 minute clip of the first wave of soldiers storming the beach in  Saving Private Ryan.
Students handed in organizers, notes and we checked the map activity for a grade.  If you were absent, be sure to turn these in.

Tuesday 5/7

Today we visited the library once again for a very productive research session.  Students were told of the week's schedule. Please see below for this.

Wednesday: Mrs. Carlisto's classroom for the block--Propaganda lesson
Thursday: Mrs. Carlisto's room for the block--Japanese American internment
Friday: Library--Presentations on topic
                           Fill in holes in research if necessary
                          Begin planning research paper using completed yellow packet

Presentation expectations:

You will be able to talk through all aspects of your topic without any notecards or other aids.  

Background: What are the events that lead up to the event/topic? Where does the topic fall within the context of the war?

Topic: The essentials--who, what, where, when, why?  What is the story?

Impact: What happens as a result of your topic?  What does it lead to?  Are there any connections to today?

Monday 5/6

Today we assigned topics and headed to the library to begin to research the topics.  Reminder you must have several resources for the a paper AND it is not enough to just find the articles; you must READ them and take notes!

4/30

Today we finished up our discussion of Hitler's rise to power.  We then moved into our discussion of Pearl Harbor and read Daniel Inouye's first hand account of that day.  Please see our blog for those clips.
HW: Respond to the prompt on the blog.  Remember 7-12 sentences that contain substance for your response and then read a few other responses and comment (2-3sentences of substance).

4/29

WOO HOO State testing is over for a while!  We kicked off Clarklisto's WWII project today.
HW:  Please go to the our blog to respond to the prompt.


In addition, many students failed to turn in their essays on Call of the Wild today and very few opted to stay period 10 to complete these.  The essay is a major grade and it will be difficult to pass without the grade.


There will not be a reading log due this week but you need to be reminded that your WWII book needs to be completed by May 15th.

4/23

Today in class I handed out the assignment of rate essay (see below).  I explained the assignment with great detail.  I explained the essay, a rough draft and the worksheet will be expected to be turned in on Monday of next week.  I also eliminated the reading logs for the week.
We then read ch 6 together in class.  Students will be given class periods tomorrow and Thursday to work toward finishing the book and writing the essay as I will be out of district grading ELA exams.

Reminder that permission slips for the movie should be returned tomorrow.


After reading the novel and reflecting on who thrives and who dies, it becomes clear that London feels certain qualities are necessary for survival.  What are three of these qualities and how does London make them clear to us?
