3/29

Today we looked at a book 2 scenario and worked with partners to walk through what Wednesday 4/18 promises.  Homework continues to be hat same as it has been since Monday.


The homework assignment for the week is to finish COTW, annotate (post its), log COTW time on log that will be collected Friday and complete worksheet question on a separate sheet of paper  See below for handout of questions.

Today we got back book #1s and we talked about strategies and questions.  We also looked at 5 different essays and used the NYS rubric to grade these essays in order to familiarize ourselves with the way the rubric works and what is necessary to move from a 3 to  a 4 or a 2 to a 3.

3/23

Happy Friday.  Today we finished booklet #3 and talked a bit about the different types of test questions we might be asked and about the options for organizing them.  Homework is to be sure 150 are read and logged for Monday.

Today we took a practice ELA book 3 which requires a contrast essay.  We will take the class period tomorrow to finish this booklet.  HW is to read log and post it.

3/21

Today we revised our essays and then discussed suspense in chapter 6 and how London built suspense.  HW for tonight is to complete the paragraph about how suspense is built around "the bet".  A worksheet was handed out.  Also logs will be collected on Monday 150 minutes worth of reading.

3/20

Today we used the NYS rubric to assess a few essays or sections of essays.  We discussed the different methods of organizing comparison /Contrast essays.  HW is to re-read ch 6 looking for moments when Jack London creates suspense in the chapter.  You should keep post-its on the chapter and explore HOW London creates the suspense.  Log your COTW time on your reading logs.

3/19

Today in class students used their notes and the text to write an essay in which they contrast the owners that Buck has come to know in this chapter with the ones he has had prior to this chapter.  The objective of today is to assess what additional instruction might be necessary to ensure they are ready to write for the test on April 17th. Homework is to read ch 6 for understanding and to take notes as they read.  The time spent reading COTW should be logged and post its should be kept in the book.

3/14

Today we read a large portion of "The Toil of Trace and Trail"--chapter 5 of COTW. HW is to finish chapter 5 with annotations that focus on the differences between Hal, Mercedes and Charles and Francois and Perreault AND the differences between how Buck adapted to the new environment and how H, M and C do not adapt.  Also read log and post it 150 minutes due on MONDAY.

3/13

Today we spent time working with the NYS rubric to rate our responses from yesterday.  Ask you student about MDOLC!  HW read chapter 5 up until the paragraph that begins with "But she was a clannish creature".  It's about 4 pages in.  I will collect logs on Monday instead of tomorrow.  150 minutes will be expected. Have a good night.

We worked together today to craft the best response to a writing prompt keeping in mid the qualities of an exceptional piece of writing.  Hw for tonight is to read.log and post it and write an exceptional long write in reader's notebook.

Today we checked our guess definitions against the actual definitions then began reading chapter 4.  The assignment for tonight is to finish reading chapter 4 for understanding which means you should take NOTES and ask questions in your reflections on reading section.  Also here is a link to the vocabulary words for  this week's quiz on Friday  Chapter 4 vocab cards.

Today in class we shared our answers to questions on the worksheet of chapter 3 and looked very  closely at the text to determine why Jack London included details he did and the impact of doing so.  We looked closely at reasons for making the inferences we did.  HW: GUESS DEFINITIONS, read log post-it.

3/1

March, though predicted to come in like a lion, has come in quite like a lamb!  Today I collected reading logs and distributed new ones.  We then broke into groups to finish the ch 3 worksheet noting the book pages where we found our information.  HW: Study vocabulary.

2/29

Today we spent time delving it not Jack London's language and his tendency to tell us something then spend time illustrating what he means.  I also returned a million papers and we spent time looking at and turning in our printed out grads tim missing work attached or a clear plan for turning in or making up missing work.  Students were reminded there will be a vocabulary quiz Friday and that logs will be collected tomorrow.  HW: Finish reading your 150 minutes and keeping post its.
