Clarklisto Quarter 3 Project - WWII

Day #1 Monday, March 28th:
1. Choose partners for project / Sign into Google
2. Mr. Clark introduces general timeline of WWII in hallway
3. What specific events fall under each of the 11 categories on the timeline.  Students should include the date(s) of the event and the listing of the event.  For every event you and your partner add please include your full names in parenthesis.

Homework March 28th:
Read Section 1 & 2 of Chapter 26 "The War Begins and "The Homefront" of the text, pages 804-815.

Day #2 Tuesday, March 29th:
1. Draft - Each partnership will choose randomly TWO categories to become familiar with for this Clarklisto project.
   ---Trades are allowed if you do not like your category but you may only trade sheets of same color


2. After a category is picked the partnership MUST choose one specific event from the chosen category.  Those event choices come from the list from the class master timeline.


3.Partnerships are required now to find an article on one timeline topic from each category using book sources first then links provided (approved by teacher/2 total)


4. Read, highlight/underline and annotate each article as a partnership.  Complete one article and the research sheet by the end of the block (GROUP GRADE) and start a second.


Homework March 29th:

Read Section 3 & 4 of Chapter 26 "War in Europe & North Africa" and "War in the Pacific," pages 815-825.


Day #3 Wednesday, March 30th:
1. As partners finishing reading your first article.  Highlight/underline and annotate (this is a grade).  After reading the article, the text and any other resources you accessed finish your first research sheet.

2. Research Sheet #1 is due by the end of the block.

3. If time permits, you and your partner should then pick your second timeline topic from your category.  Fill out the beginning of the second research sheet after making a copy (same as yesterday).  If time permits find an article to support your second topic.  Photocopy.  Collaboratively read.


Homework March 30th:
Read Section 5 of Chapter 26 "Victory and Consequences" pages 825-832.

Day #4 Thursday, March 31st:
1. Research Day - Work to finalize research sheet #2.  You will have 1/2 the block on Friday to complete the research.

Homework March 31st:
Watch "Homefront" CBS The Century (see below)/ Answer the corresponding questions

Friday, April 1st -
A) If you have not completed your research sheet for topic #2.  You have the first 30 minutes of the block to complete it.
B) Hand-in research sheets #1 and #2 (shared).
C) The class will walk through the 11 themes collaboratively.
D) Partners now decide what subtopic will be their focus. Fill-in information on this link 
E) Now that you have a specific focus your FIRST individual task of our WWII project is to find an authentic photo of your SUBTOPIC (timeline topic).  The requirements for the photo are:

  • It must be an authentic photo from WWII
  • It must come from a legitimate website (that website must be included on the copy)
  • Students should write a 3-5 sentence caption explaining the details of the photo AND how it relates to the topic.

Final product - print out a hard copy of the photo with the website and caption.  Place the      hard copy on the timeline in the hallway. Example

F) Students should make a "WWII Workspace first name" in Google slides and link it to your name on the final topic sheet.   Please put all images, write-ups, and links so it can be viewed by teachers and used by students for the last part of this project.

Friday, April 1 Homework:
1. Watch the video "Civilians at War" The Century (see below) This video is 1 hour!
2. Answer the questions on the worksheet LINK
3. Reading log that includes all of the social studies reading.



Monday April 4th

  1. Students will hand in “Civilians at War” Worksheet and Reading Log
  2. Students will log into Google and check that their workspace is correct by checking the color coding on the Final Topic Sheet
  3. Complete the photo portion of the project. Once caption is complete on workspace(your slideshow), create a Google Doc and organize it like the example and print it out → show it to Mr. Clark or Ms. Carlisto then hang it in the hallway.  This should be completed around ½ way through the block.
  4. Your SECOND individual task of our WWII project is to find an authentic image of your SUBTOPIC (timeline topic).  All work for this should be recorded on a second slide in your slideshow that you shared Friday. Possibilities for the image include:
    1. Authentic Newspaper headline
    2. Propaganda/Movie poster from the time period
    3. Map with Strategy from the time period
    4. Political Cartoon from the time period
  5. Requirements for the image:
    1. It must be an authentic image (not a photo) from WWII
    2. It must come from a legitimate website (that website must be included on the copy)
    3. Students should write a 3-5 sentence caption explaining the details of the image AND how it relates to the topic.

               Monday 4/4/16 HW: A) Photo should be posted in hallway and image choices found and placed on slideshow.
    B) Read/log/post it--150 minutes due Monday WWII IR books must be complete by 4/22


Tuesday, April 5th
During class students will work on their second individual part of the WWII Clarklisto Project.  (see Monday).  All work should be done on your workspace in slides--copy and paste work you want to finalize onto a Google doc and print it out to post on lockers in hallway.

Above is a political cartoon surrounding the Battle of Midway, June 1942.  The Battle of Midway was an attack by the Japanese on the American position at Midway Island.  It came six months after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and one month after a naval draw at the Coral Sea.  Japan was hoping for a decisive blow after the Coral Sea to set the US back.  The Japanese got just the opposite as this was a huge victory for the US as the cartoonist uses the "tide stick" and slogan "slight shifting of Japanese current" to show that this battle was the turning point battle in the Pacific.  Also, the cartoonist makes the Japanese look bad by placing the Japanese flag on the ocean creature who is getting smacked in the head by "tide stick."

Wednesday 4/6/2016

  1. First half of block--complete image caption and post in hallway.
    1. Reminder--all work should appear on your slideshow.

  1. Your THIRD individual task of our WWII project is to find an eyewitness account of your SUBTOPIC (timeline topic). First you will determine what eyewitness might be out there to find. Please complete the Eyewitness Perspective Wksht with your partner now.

  1. Search for an eyewitness account from within your subtopic.  Place the link on your workspace. Read through and annotate the account. You will react to the account in writing so your annotations should both make connections and react to the story being told.
HOMEWORK for Wednesday 4/6:
1. Be sure to have an eyewitness account from your subtopic. This must be from a reliable, reputable source and at least 2 pages in length. Be sure to link this to your slideshow, you may choose to print it out before class.

2. Read/log/post it 150 minutes due Monday 4/11 and WWII books due 4/22


Thursday, 4/7:
Students should come in with an acceptable eyewitness account from their subtopic.  (reputable source, and of significant length 2+ pages).  In class students will actively read the source (underline/highlight and annotate).  As they read or after they read (depending on what works for each individual) students will fill out a reaction sheet (linked below).  Example Reaction sheet. The actively read article and reaction sheet need to be completed by the end of the period.


HOMEWORK:

  1. Finish article
  2. Finish reaction sheet be sure to connect this to your Google Slideshow and give me permission to edit it.
  3. Watch John Green’s WWII Video “Homefront Part II”

FRIDAY 4/8/16
You will now get creative with the eyewitness account you read. Using your notes from the worksheet, your understanding of your topic and the eyewitness account you will create one of the following creative projects below.

You can:
  1. Write a poem about the account you read. You must incorporate elements of the story and of your research in this piece with a creative title. See Example --Minimum of 24 lines with ample history from your topic
  2. Create a comic strip that tells the eyewitness story. If you have a comic strip generator in mind, go for it. If not, I have a trial subscription to this really fun one and you should use this link Pixton.com/a/MXXB-RV and join my classroom.  See Example -- Comic strips must be a minimum of 4 panels and be true to the story.
  3. Create 2 word clouds. You will need to carefully reread your eyewitness account and pull out words that capture the sights and sounds and historical terms. Save them to a google doc then go to Worditout.com to paste them and then play around with how they appear on the page. The second word cloud should capture the emotions of the account. Again all the words you want to use should appear on the google doc then copy and paste them into the program.  See Example and Example --You must have a minimum of 20 well selected words/phrases for each word cloud. Remember this is your spot to prove you know your history and to make the story come alive with sensory details.

  1. Work on eyewitness creative piece-you will have one more blocked class day to work on it. It is due by end of block on MONDAY
  2. Logs are due Monday 4/11 with 150 minutes logged-IR books due on 4/22



Monday 4/11
  1. Reading logs collected-your next log is for the week of 4/11-4/22. It is due on Friday 4/22 with 150 minutes.
  2. Today is a work day.  All creative pieces are due by the end of the block. They must be linked to your slideshow and shared with acarlisto@lakeplacidcsd.net.
  3. Be sure to
  • edit carefully for spelling, grammar, capitalization
  • Make certain you have proven you know your topic by including historically accurate information from your research and your eyewitness account.

    TUESDAY 4/12
    Last week of WWII Clarklisto
    To this point each student has:
    1. Investigated two topics from two categories with his/her partner
    2. Chosen ONE TOPIC on which to focus his/her study
    1. A. Found and described an authentic photo of his/her topic
    2. B. Found and described a second visual (non-photo)
    3. C. Investigated an eyewitness and creatively presented it
    Now will be the time to BRING IT ALL TOGETHER!  How?
    You will produce a 110-150 second presentation on your A, B and C (see above)
    First, you must create a SCRIPT covering your A, B and C.  Next you will create an I-Movie where you give a concise summary of your topic, review your PHOTO, your SECOND IMAGE, and your EYEWITNESS CREATION.
    Your summary should be about 30 seconds, your script for PHOTO and IMAGE should be 20-30 seconds each. As the script is read the visuals need to be displayed.
    Your script on the EYEWITNESS needs to be 40-50 seconds.  Here, you may choose to first introduce your eyewitness account and then take the audience through your creation by reading parts or walking us through key parts.  Visual support will be important.
    Now please use this TEMPLATE to make a copy-name it namescript and link it to your slideshow. Be sure it is shared with acarlisto@lakeplacidcsd.net.

      Wednesday 4/13

      Today is a busy day.  You will begin by making sure your write-ups are logical by choosing a partner to practice your reading out loud with.  If you are listening your job is a serious one-You must provide constructive criticism that will enable the reader to make significant changes to his/her piece.  We are expecting the write-ups to be told in a logical and informative way. Remember your audience does not know much about your topic so you should present in a way that they will be able to understand. (Do not start in the middle!)
      Once you have read your writeups to at least 2 different partners and made changes where necessary, you will begin an iMovie.

      Your goal is to create two title frames today and to record your entire audio ( you may record in Garageband and convert to iTunes or simply record in iMovie)
      Instructions for title frame one and title frame two:

      1. The first title frame will introduce the category--you may copy this off the sheet.

      1. The second title frame will have:
      1. Your subtopic
      2. dates
      3. “An alternative name that captures the significance of your topic” -think of this as a sort of a telling nickname--enclose this in quotes
      (i.e. Battle of Midway, 1942 “The Pacific Turning Point” OR Battle of Saipan, June 1944 “The US Needs Airstrips to Win”)
      4. Your name in the lower right-hand side of the frame

      Be sure your audio is recorded and you have noted the ipad you used with Ms. Carlisto

      Thursday 4/14/16 and Friday 4/15

      Today is another work day. By the end of the block you should have your iMovie complete. This means the following components are in and placed carefully:
      • Frame one with category spelled correctly and centered on a plain background
      • Frame 2 on a plain background with (in order):
        • Subtopic
        • Date(s)
        • Creative alternate name in quotes
        • Your name (ok if centered rather than right justified)
      • Your photo
      • Your image
      • Your creative eyewitness piece(s)
      • Complete audio aligned with all frames above

      Once this is done you will need to upload your movie to youtube. If you have made an iMovie on a desktop follow the directions below:
      1. Go to share dropdown menu
      2. Choose export movie using QuickTime
      3. Name the movie (yourname WWII)
      4. Save to desktop (it will default to movie folder but it is easier if you change to desktop)
      5. Once this process is complete, log into your lakeplacidcsd.net account.
      6. Go to youtube
      7. Select my channel
      8. Select upload, change setting from public to unlisted
      9. Be sure you have named it your name WWII
      10. Once video is uploaded copy the link and share it with me at acarlisto@lakeplacidcsd.net

      If you have completed iMovie on an iPad share it to youtube on the iPad

      • By the end of the block Friday all movies must be shared to youtube-

      Today we get to see all your hard work.  Here are the videos. Nice work. Be sure to watch them to review for your test in social studies tomorrow.  No homework for English as Ms. Carlisto was out today. Your logs will be collected tomorrow.

        Period 3:  We completed a writing assignment in class today based on "The Dinner Guest".

        Period 4:  We discussed "The Dinner Guest" and the type of discussion questions that need to be asked before discussion.  It was clear that discussion can be meaningful if taken seriously. HW: answer the short answer question--Who is the hero of the story?  Remember R.A. C.E. C. E

        Period 3 and 7: Today we read for ten minutes, I returned yesterday's test. We went over the right answers and strategies for doing better next time. You then read, "The Dinner Party" and annotated it. Ending with two possible discussion questions.

        Period 4: We read an article on handling stress then took an opportunity to discuss it with our peers in an effort to deepen our understanding of the text. Since it was  shortened period-we will reread the text and take a 5 question test on it in class tomorrow.  HW: Read/Log/Post it

        Today we looked at another book trailer and then looked at an example of a well written short answer response in an effort to get ready to craft our very own excellent responses.
        We then took a look at the silent discussion from yesterday to grow our ideas, sat next to writing partners and began writing our responses that were shared in Google classroom.  The final product is due Monday along with reading logs.


        PERIOD 4--you are a day behind--we had silent discussion today and will craft short answers in class on Monday.  Be sure your logs are done.
