2/28

Today we read for 10 minutes. Then we began our in depth discussion of chapter 3 and really began taking note of the language Jack London uses to manipulate us as readers.  We began answering questions on the chapter 3 handout.  HW: Read log/post it, print out grades by tomorrow and bring them to class. logs collected on Thursday and vocab quiz on Friday.

2/27

We finished reading chapter 3 in class today. Tomorrow we will work with the text more closely. HW: Study vocab, read-log post it and a new long write that investigates the language used to create the reaction you had while reading.

2/23

What a beautiful view from the third floor today! Today I collected reading logs and checked long writes.  Students read for 10 minutes and then we moved on to discuss context clues.  Then we found ten words in chapter three and used context clues to help define them.  See the handout linked here.  I then provided actual definitions and the homework assignment is to write a story that uses at least five of the ten words.  Have fun with it.

For those of you missing tomorrow here is the link to chapter 3 worksheet.  Read the chapter 2 times and answer the questions on the worksheet in note style (no need for complete restatement of questions and paragraph response but develop answer entirely).

2/16

Today,I collected Reading Logs and gave out new ones.  We also investigated thoroughly chapter 2 of COTW.  We looked specifically at the three paragraphs at the beginning of the chapter that deal with Curly’s death.  While re-reading we noted the point of view, the likenesses between Buck and humans, and looked carefully at how Curly’s death impacted the relationship between Buck and Spitz.  We also looked at sample responses to quiz questions and noted what was necessary to earn the highest amount of points.  See attached examples and identify for yourself  the qualities of a stellar response.  HW is to complete another LONG WRITE.  For this particular long write, you should base it on a post it that has a strong reaction.  I want you to please find a post-it that has  a strong reaction, go back and read the part of the text that produced the strong reaction and try to identify how the author manipulated you to feel that way.  What language did he use, was it a word, a phrase, a point of view?

Tomorrow we will share Flocabs, you should make time to come in and see some of your classmates work.

Reading Logs collected next Thursday 2/23 150 minutes.
